The Founding of Acumed
Acumed, originally named Accurate Machine and Design, was founded by Mary and Randy Huebner in 1988 in New Jersey. The Huebners had a vision of creating a niche company, focused on trauma products. Their goal was to create innovative products that also improved patient care. Initially, the company occupied 1100 square feet and had three employees. Acumed started out almost exclusively engineering and creating prototypes for other companies. One such product, the Bipolar Acetabular Cup, was licensed by Acumed to Exactech, and is still sold today.
Acumed’s First Product Line
At the end of 1990, the Huebners moved Acumed to Oregon. In late 1991, Acumed introduced its first line of arthroscopy screws, intended for repair of ACL ligaments in the knee. This product, named the Oregon Fixation Screw, or OFS, became very popular and was marketed under an Acumed label. With funds generated from the OFS product line, Acumed developed products like Acutrak and Polarus, and moved from arthroscopy into trauma. Acumed continued to grow its product line by adding the Stableloc External Fixator and the Mayo Clinic Congruent Elbow Plates. Acumed’s industry reputation for developing innovative and quality products was established.
Today
Acumed currently has over 90,000 square feet of manufacturing space at its world-class facility in Hillsboro, Oregon. Acumed can also proudly call itself a global company, and currently sells products in over 30 countries around the world. Additions to the Acumed product line continue to address the complicated issues facing orthopedic surgeons and their patients.
Randy Huebner is still employed by Acumed, and he continues developing innovative devices to supplement our product line.
