Acumed and the Western Orthopaedic Association host successful educational training course for orthopaedic residents Jul 17, 2012 June educational training course offered residents hands-on opportunity to hone their surgical skills Contemporary surgical techniques and minimally invasive treatment options were the focus of an educational training course for orthopaedic residents held on June 13, 2012 at the Acumed Learning Center and Laboratory in Hillsboro, Oregon. Resident’s Skills Lab: Upper and Lower Extremity Fracture Management, hosted by Acumed in conjunction with the Western Orthopaedic Association, was attended by 15 orthopaedic residents from area hospitals. The course was focused on a variety of shoulder, elbow, foot and ankle fractures and the latest surgical approaches to repair them, including the use of plates, screws, pins and other innovative solutions. The curriculum, educational rather than product-focused, was determined by the course faculty and presented in a collaborative, collegial style with the course attendees. The educational experience at the Acumed Learning Center involved a variety of teaching-learning approaches including lab demonstrations, lectures, small group discussion and hands-on cadaveric studies and practice. In its role as a supporting sponsor, Acumed supplied all instruments, products and specimens used in the course; laboratory facilities were also provided. The course’s faculty included a number of distinguished West Coast orthopaedic surgeons: Jesse McCarron, M.D., chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Section at the Portland VA Medical Center and who has an academic appointment at Oregon Health and Sciences University. Gregory Gramstad, M.D., specializes in the elbow and is in private practice at Rebound Orthopedics and Neurosurgery in Vancouver, Washington. Robert Tonks, M.D., a trauma surgeon who practices in San Diego, California with the Sharp Healthcare System. Richard Gellman, M.D., specializes in the foot and ankle and is in private practice at Summit Orthopedics in Portland, Oregon. Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw System Released by Acumed Sep 22, 2011 Hillsboro, OR April 2011 -- In the tradition of providing surgeons with innovative solutions, Acumed® announces the newly designed Acumed® Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw System -- an intramedullary option to treat middle-third clavicle fractures. Addressing issues common to intramedullary clavicle fixation techniques; complicated and invasive surgical techniques, soft-tissue stripping, implant migration or failure and more. The minimally invasive Acumed® Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw provides excellent fracture stability and restoration of anatomical alignment. Designed in conjunction with Robert M. Orfaly, M.D., the Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw offers a novel surgical solution for acute fractures, malunions and nonunions of the clavicle: the subosseous screw is implanted entirely within the canal of the clavicle to preserve the periosteum and surrounding soft tissue. This fully intramedullary Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw implant may decrease painful prominent hardware and soft tissue irritation, and may reduce the risk of infection. The Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw, features differential pitch threads to maximize holding control and compression. Unlike other implants available on the market, the Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw does not require any extra-medullary means of fixation to maintain compression or prevent implant migration. The Dual-Trak Clavicle Screw System is organized in a comprehensive tray with all the instrumentation necessary to implant the screw. This versatile system can be used as a stand-alone solution or in conjunction with the Acumed® Locking Clavicle Plate System for a complete clavicle solution system for surgeon and hospital convenience. About Acumed® Acumed® is a global leader and pioneer of innovative orthopaedic and medical solutions developed to improve patient care. Acumed Raises the Bar at 66th Annual ASSH Meeting with Distal Radius Fragment Specific Plates Aug 26, 2011 Hillsboro, OR August 2011 – The Distal Radius Fragment Specific Plates are the latest wrist implants released by Acumed® and are an addition to the all-embracing Acu-Loc® 2 System launched in February 2011. The modular nature of the plates allows compression of fracture fragments from multiple directions. Internal studies show having two distal radius plates with a 70-90˚ angle between them increases the stability of the construct and can address complex fractures that can be a challenge for a single plate. The Acumed decision to house this new addition in the Acu-Loc® 2 Plating System tray provides quick and easy access to all implants and instruments needed. The complete Acu-Loc® 2 System featuring the new Distal Radius Fragment Specific Plates and the Elbow Plating System will be on display at Acumed® booth #701. A new product demonstration workshop held by Acumed® will provide attendees with an exclusive hands-on opportunity to learn about plate fixation of distal radius fractures including the features, benefits, and functionality of the new Acu-Loc® 2 System, plus a special chance to explore the new Distal Radius Fragment Specific Plating System. A second demonstration workshop will discuss the most current minimally invasive techniques for Scaphoid fixation presented by international expert Nicholas Goddard, FRCS. Following the lecture a hands-on lab will give attendees the opportunity to practice the latest techniques using the Acumed® Acutrak™ 2 Headless Compression Screw System. In addition to workshop labs, Acumed® will be holding four in-booth lectures on distal radius fixation presented by lead surgeons William B. Geissler, M.D. and Daniel Brown, FRCS. iPad® learning platforms stationed in the Acumed® booth presents the Acu-Loc® 2 and Elbow Plating Systems in an interactive digital format. All Acumed® product lines will be on display at the Acumed booth, along with the consulting surgeons and members of various Acumed® design teams. Acumed Announces the Launch of an Expanded Calcaneal Plating System Jun 03, 2011 Acumed announces a new standard of treatment for calcaneal fractures. The newly expanded Acumed® Calcaneal Plating System is a complete family of plates designed specifically for a minimally invasive approach to challenging calcaneal fractures. The Acumed® MINI-Calc™ Plates, a new addition to the Acumed® Calcaneal Plating System, provide maximum benefits in performance, versatility, and reliability for one of the most challenging fractures to treat. These approach-specific, low-profile plates target the best quality bone in the calcaneus and minimize soft tissue irritation while still providing a durable construct. Additionally, Acumed® MINI-Calc™ plates can be used in conjunction with the Acumed® Lower Extremity Modular System for easy customization of plates and instrumentation for each case. Developed in conjunction with Greg A. Horton, M.D., and Steven A. Herbst, M.D., the Acumed® Calcaneal Plating System is comprised of twenty left- and right-specific calcaneal plates. This comprehensive plate system provides surgeons with more options to address a wide range of fracture types and patient needs. Although calcaneal fractures are the most common tarsal bone fractures, they are the most difficult to treat. Today’s most common solution, the extensile lateral incision, often results in wound complications for nearly 30-percent of patients. The Acumed® Calcaneal Plating System was designed for a minimally invasive approach using a sinus tarsi incision, reducing the risk of wound complication and advancing the treatment of calcaneal fractures. |
