Women in Medicine: Hand & Upper Extremity Surgical Skills

Overview

Acumed’s Women’s Course is a dynamic one-day program designed to empower women surgeons at every stage of their careers. This immersive course provides a unique blend of hands-on cadaveric workshops, engaging lectures, and in-depth case discussions, offering participants the opportunity to enhance their surgical skills and expand their knowledge.

In addition to technical training, the course fosters a supportive environment where attendees can connect with peers and share experiences, exploring the journey from residency to practice. Led by an esteemed faculty of experts, participants will gain advanced instruction on injury treatment, practical tips drawn from real-world clinical experience, and insights into current trends.

Beyond professional development, the course also emphasizes strategies for managing career demands while prioritizing personal well-being, equipping attendees with the tools needed for long-term success in both their personal and professional lives.

The program will begin with a group dinner on Friday, March 13.

Target Audience

Surgeons in their first 5 years of practice and fellows looking to learn advanced treatment options for orthopedic fractures and reconstruction.

Faculty

Kathleen McKeon, MD
Dr. Kathleen E. McKeon is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and wrist surgery, with expertise in sports injuries, fracture care, nerve surgery, and microsurgery. A graduate of Yale University and Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine, she completed her orthopedic residency in St. Louis and a hand surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University. Recognized as one of Birmingham’s Top Doctors and a leader in her field, Dr. McKeon is also a dedicated team physician and researcher focused on sports-related hand and wrist injuries.

Ayesha Rahman, MD
Dr. Rahman is the Co-Director of Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery at New York-Presbyterian (NYP) Hospital in Queens, an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell and Columbia University and teaches HSS orthopedic residents at on the trauma service at NYP Queens. She completed a Hand & Upper Extremity fellowship at the University of California San Francisco, orthopedic residency at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, and medical school at Georgetown University. She also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan and has worked on research and development of orthopedic devices. She is active in numerous societies including the ASSH, Pride Ortho, the Perry Initiative, and Cornell / NYP diversity committees.

Lauren Shapiro, MD
Dr. Lauren Shapiro is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in upper extremity injuries, with a focus on traumatic and sports-related conditions. She earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, completed her orthopedic surgery residency there, and pursued a fellowship in orthopedic surgery at Duke University, where she also earned a master’s degree in health analytics. Her research centers on patient-centered care, shared decision-making, and improving treatment quality, particularly in resource-limited settings, and she actively contributes to global initiatives advancing surgical care and education.
